For some, it is a family trait passed down for generations; for others it comes from their own life experiences. The reasons people become anxiety-ridden and worrisome are many, with impacts often devastating, requiring life-altering changes.  Yes, there are medications to help and this article’s intent is not to dissuade from their use.  The purpose is to present Christians with the truth, which will allow them to release paralyzing mental weights.

TRUTH #1 – Remember who you are connected to

and with His <Jesus’> wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:5 ESV

Mental illness is part of the healing Jesus paid for. One may ask, “If I’ve already been healed, why is anxiety still plaguing my life?” The answer may be in your focal point.

TRUTH #2 – Acknowledge the source of fear

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7 NLT

Anxiety and worry are the destructive byproducts of a mind that is focused on FEAR. If God hasn’t given you a spirit of fear or timidity, where did it come from?  It’s from the enemy, who “…comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I <Jesus>have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10).

TRUTH #3 – Recognize the purpose of fear

As long as the enemy can keep you believing that the stronghold of fear is normal, unchangeable and involuntary, the longer he keeps you from operating in the full understanding of who you are in Christ.

Since we are followers of Christ, we no longer have to be bound by ANY strongholds.  Freedom comes from knowing the TRUTH (that the source is the enemy) and accessing the power of our salvation (the Word of God) to fight with the renewal of our minds.

TRUTH #4 -Refocus your attention

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you.  Isaiah 26:3 NLT

Redirect your focus from fear to faith!  Peter could walk on water as long as his eyes were on Jesus.  When his attention shifted to the turbulence of the waters, he began to sink. Arm yourself with faith-inducing scriptures.

TRUTH #5 – Fight with the Word of God

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 NIV

Fight back by filling your mind with promises/truths from the Word of God that can counteract the lies the enemy uses in his attempts to distract us.

Treat the Word of God like medicine—taking a dose  every time symptoms (fear) present itself.  The Word is 100% effective!  For faster results, add to it: Praise & Thanksgiving!
